National Hispanic Heritage Month

 

The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute is proud to present an exceptional musical program in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, as part of its mission to showcase the excellence of the Spanish-speaking world in the United States. This program offers a snapshot of relevant musical references, featuring renowned classical composers like Manuel de Falla and Pablo Casals, as well as celebrated contemporary artists such as Stephen Sondheim. Additionally, the program features a captivating show by Flamenco star Yolanda Osuna.  

Furthermore, this program provides a wonderful opportunity to explore and immerse yourself in some of New York City’s most exceptional performing arts venues, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Ángel Orensanz Foundation. It promises to be an unforgettable experience that combines the richness of Hispanic culture with the grandeur of these iconic venues. 

October 10th 8PM – Franz Schubert Filharmonia at Carneige Hall

Under the baton of Music Director Tomàs Grau, the Franz Schubert Filharmonia makes its Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage debut. The performance features Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a beloved work of Spanish classical music, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, from the New World Symphony.

October 12th & 13th 6:30pm / 9:00pm- Authentic Flamenco at Fundación Ángel Orensanz

Admire the jaw-dropping production by the Royal Opera of Madrid, the most important performing arts institution in Spain. Experience a vibrant show full of sensibility and powerful images. This show brings together award-winning professionals for an unforgettable performance with stunning vocals, instruments, and dance. Yolanda Osuna, an internationally renowned flamenco dancer born in Cordoba, Spain, has led an critically-acclaimed career, from the tablaos in Andalusia to stages all over the world. Now she’s joined in performance by flamenco stars such as Juan Fernández, Bernardo Miranda, and more.

October 16th 8pm Grand Teatro Real Gala in New York at Lincoln Center

Join the Royal Opera of Madrid for an evening at David Geffen Hall with exceptional Spanish performers of great international renown such as the cellist Pablo Ferrández, the cantaora Esperanza Ferrández and Juanjo Mena conducting the Orchestra of the Teatro Real. 
This unique gala concert transposes the essence of Spain with Falla’s El amor brujo (Love, the Magician) with wonderful Flamenco singer Esperanza Fernández from Seville, followed by Dvořák’s Cello Concerto performed by Spanish virtuoso Pablo Ferrández, prizewinner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

October 22nd 8pm – Premiere of the Musical Here We Are

Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, Here We Are will feature Francois Battiste, Tracie Bennett, Bobby Cannavale, Micaela Diamond, Amber Gray, Jin Ha, Rachel Bay Jones, Denis O’Hare, Steven Pasquale, David Hyde Pierce, and Jeremy Shamos. 

The musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, a book by Tony Award–nominee David Ives, and is inspired by two films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, by Luis Buñuel.
