The QSSI’s cultural advisory committee gathers leading experts in a variety of disciplines to provide insight and enrichment on activities, grants, and other collaboration efforts to advance our mission.

GASTRONOMY

José Andrés

Twice featured in Time’s “100 Most Influential People” list and James Beard Foundation “Outstanding Chef” and “Humanitarian of the Year” awards recipient, José Andrés is an internationally-recognized culinary innovator ,author, educator, humanitarian, and chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup.

ART EDUCATION

Cristina Domenech, Ph.D.

Native to Valencia, Spain, Dr. Domenech is a specialist in Spanish art, having worked at Hispanic Society Museum & Library, the Royal Academy of History of Spain, and the Sorolla Museum. Her academic interest lies in the work of artist John Singer Sargent in Spain.

EDUCATION

Chancellor Carmen Fariña

A daughter of Spanish immigrants, Fariña is the Former Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, the largest school district in the United States which serves 1.1 million students in over 1,800 schools.

HISTORY

Richard Kagan, Ph.D.

Prof. Kagan specializes in the history of Spain and its empire, along with the cultures and societies of the broader Mediterranean world. He is currently at work on a biography of Henry Charles Lea, the 19th-Century Philadelphia publisher and historian credited with writing the first “scientific” history of the Spanish Inquisition.

MUSIC

Ricardo Llorca

Llorca is a world-renowned classical music and opera composer. He is originally from Alicante, Spain, and has been teaching at The Juilliard School since 1996.

HISTORY

Jaime Olmedo, Ph.D.

Olmedo is the Technical Director at the Spanish Royal Academy of History, Vice President of the Fundación Duques de Soria, and also teaches Spanish Literature and History at the Complutense University of Madrid. He previously served in the Academic Department of the Cervantes Institute (1998-2002) and in the Royal Spanish Academy (2000-2002) in Madrid.

LITERATURE

Carmen Posadas

A Spanish-Uruguayan award-winning author, Posadas has published novels, children’s books, essays, and short stories. She has been lauded as one of the most outstanding writers of her generation by Newsweek Magazine and was the winner of the prestigious 1998 Planeta Prize.

SCIENCE

Lucia Regales, Ph.D.

Dr. Regales is a cancer scientist and genomic researcher born and raised in Asturias, Spain. She has worked in leading US cancer centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering and Irving Cancer Center.  Her current focus is the development of new precision medicine treatments and the identification of new biomarkers for cancer patients.

Carmen Reviriego

Reviriego is President of Callia and Callia Foundation. Callia is a company dedicated to art advisory in Latin America and Spain from an artistic and social perspective, project for which she received the 2008 “National Award for Business Innovation” in Spain.

SCIENCE

Laura Rojas-Marcos

Rojas-Marcos is a psychologist, researcher, and speaker, considered one of the 100 most influential Spanish women. She has worked in hospitals and institutions across the U.S. and Spain, authored numerous books, and reached international acclaim for her expertise in anxiety, depression, stress, and relationships.

FASHION

Eugenia Silva

Silva is a world-renowned Spanish model, who broke barriers in the fashion industry when she served as the image of Oscar de la Renta, former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute. Having appeared on more than 100 magazine covers such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Vogue, more recently, she has expanded her reach in beauty, style, business, and philanthropy.
