Nominee Announcement for the 2026 Talía Awards in New York

The Talía Awards are back! The highest honor awarding excellence in the Performing Arts in Spanish, they are presented by the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain (AAEE).

This year, within the 28 categories of the Talía Awards, one category will award Latino and Hispanic productions in New York: “Award for the Best Hispanic Performing Arts Production in New York”

This year, for the fourth time, the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute supported the AAEE and organized the Selection Committee comprised of journalists, professors, and practitioners within the field of the performing arts who provide their unique and astute perspectives in determining the nominees.

The Committee is supported by honorary members who strongly support Hispanic theater in New York City: the Consulate General of New York and the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute.

This award, in addition to giving visibility to current Hispanic productions, will help foster the interest in developing future Hispanic productions in New York.

This year, the nominees are:

Los Soles Truncos

Produced by REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL

Los Soles Truncos is a powerful and poetic drama that explores the lives of three aristocratic sisters living in seclusion in a decaying mansion in Old San Juan. As they cling to memories of a bygone era, the outside world encroaches upon their fragile reality, forcing them to confront loss, pride, and the passage of time. Rich in symbolism and lyrical language, the play delves into themes of identity, nostalgia, and resistance. A cornerstone of Puerto Rican theater, Los Soles Truncos offers a deeply moving reflection on heritage and the enduring struggle to preserve dignity in the face of inevitable change.

Mexodus

Produced by AUDIBLE THEATER & P3 PRODUCTIONS

MEXODUS follows the extraordinary and often overlooked story of a group of Mexican American families who, during the Great Depression, embark on a journey southward in search of belonging, opportunity, and dignity. Through a dynamic blend of storytelling, music, and movement, the production captures the emotional weight of displacement and the resilience required to rebuild a life across borders. Centered on themes of identity, migration, and cultural memory, MEXODUS sheds light on a pivotal moment in history while drawing powerful parallels to contemporary experiences. The result is a moving and thought-provoking tribute to perseverance and community.

Torera

Produced by WP THEATER in coproduction with CONNECTICUT’S LONG WHARF THEATRE, THE SOL PROJECT & LATINX PLAYWRIGHTS CIRCLE

Torera tells the compelling story of Elena, a young woman determined to break barriers in the male-dominated world of bullfighting. Driven by ambition and a deep connection to tradition, she challenges societal expectations while navigating complex family dynamics and personal sacrifice. Set against the backdrop of cultural heritage and evolving identity, the play examines themes of gender, legacy, and courage. Blending intensity with moments of introspection and humor, Torera offers a fresh and nuanced perspective on what it means to fight—not only in the ring, but for one’s place in the world.

The award ceremony where the winner will be announced will take place on May 18th at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid.
