  • 7:20 p.m. “Lessons from Puerto Rico’s debt restructuring”, Jaime A. El Koury. General Counsel to the Financial Oversight & Management Board for Puerto Rico and former partner at the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.
  • 7:50 p.m. Round table: “Public debt in Spain and in the euro zone: How to assimilate the legacy of the crisis in terms of debt?”

 

FEATURING:

Rafael Domenech. Professor of Economics at the University of Valencia and Head of Economic Analysis at BBVA Research.

  • Rafael Domenech holds an MSc in Economics from the LSE and PhD in Economics from the University of Valencia. He has been Director General of the Economic Office of the President of the Government, director of the Institute of International Economics, member of the Advisory Board of the University of Valencia and collaborating researcher with the OECD, European Commission, Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Rafael del Pino Foundation. He was Speaker of the National Statistical Plan 2013-2016. He has also been a member of the Committee of Experts on the Sustainability Factor of the Public Pension System and is an Honorary Member of the Spanish Economic Association. He has published numerous articles in scientific journals of recognized national and international prestige (among others, Journal of the European Economic Association, American Economic Review, The Economic Journal or European Economic Review), on growth, human capital, economic cycles and monetary policies and prosecutors. He is the author of the books The Spanish Economy: A General Equilibrium Perspective, edited by Palgrave MacMillan, and In Search of Prosperity and The Era of Digital Disruption, edited by Deusto.

Jaime A. El Koury. Senior Legal Advisor to the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico and former partner at the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

  • Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mr. El Koury graduated from the Academia Perpetuo Socorro. He earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, summa cum laude, from Yale University in 1975 and his Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1978. After law school, El Koury served as law clerk for then Puerto Rico Supreme Court Chief Justice Jose Trías Monge. Mr. El Koury built a 35-year career at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, a leading international law firm, which he joined in 1980 to become a partner in 1986—the first Hispanic partner in firm history—and from which he retired in 2014. At Cleary, he counseled both public and private sector clients, mostly with a focus in Latin America. He is recognized for the breadth and scope of his practice, having led major transactions in virtually all corporate fields. Mr. El Koury is a member of the Bars in New York and Puerto Rico and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico and the Southern District of New York.

Tano Santos. Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Asset Management and Finance and Director of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing, Columbia Business School, Columbia University.

  • With a degree in Economics and Business from the Complutense University of Madrid and a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago, Tano Santos has developed a career in extensive and prolific teaching and research. Professor Santos’ research focuses mainly on two different areas. His first interest is the field of asset valuation, with special emphasis on theoretical and empirical models that can account for the predictability of returns, both in time series and in cross section. A second interest of Professor Santos is applied economic theory, specifically, the economics of financial innovations, as well as the theory of organizations. He is a Research Associate Professor at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and member of the Advisory Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
