The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute is pleased to announce our program of activities for Hispanic Heritage Month, a month in which we celebrate the diversity and contributions of the Hispanic community.
Join us for events that highlight different facets of the languages, literature and history of the Hispanic community. This year, bring a new friend with whom to celebrate with because it is always best to celebrate together.

September 15th – Attend our Virtual Event “La fascinante historia de la Lengua Española”
A conversation between award-winning writers Isabel Campoy and Alma Flor Ada that will be moderated by Dr. Cristina Domenech. Don’t miss this chance to discover all the history behind the Spanish language.

September 27th – Watch the Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez Read Aloud [For Kids!]
Join writer, journalist, and humanitarian Guillermo Fesser, activist Teresa Valcarce, and their friend Iridian Lucas García as they read aloud Fesser’s children’s book Get to Know Bernardo de Gálvez. This event will premiere on our Youtube channel in Spanish and in English.

October 5th – Join us for the Spanish Memorial Plaque Unveiling in Fort Greene Park to Commemorate Hispanic Contributions to the Revolutionary War
Few people know that thousands of Hispanic soldiers gave their lives for American Independence and were key to American victory during the Revolutionary War. On October 5, we will pay them tribute with the unveiling of a Spanish Memorial Plaque dedicated to these heroes who died for this cause and whose remains are located at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. This initiative is supported by the DAR, New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Iberdrola and the government of Spain.

October 15th – Mark Your Calendar for a Conversation Between Authors: Camila Sosa Villada and Carmen Posadas
To conclude Hispanic Heritage Month, we will stream a conversation between Carmen Posadas, one of the best-known authors of Spanish-language literature, and Camila Sosa Villada, winner of the last Sor Juana Inés De la Cruz award. They will talk about Camila’s latest book “Las malas” and the role of women in the Spanish-language literary scene.
This event will premiere on our Youtube channel in Spanish with English subtitles.
