Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain participated in the Board of Directors meeting for the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute of New York that took place online this Wednesday, March 17. In this annual meeting, the Board of Directors presented the results of its programs and activities for the past year 2020 as well as its plans for 2021.

Among other actions, the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute has highlighted the contributions of Hispanic heroes in the American Revolution, with special emphasis on Bernardo de Gálvez about whom it organized classes and lectures for U.S. students. It also awarded its 2020 Translation Prize to Philip W. Silver for his translation into English of Claudio Rodríguez’s work, “Alianza y Condena.” Work in 2021 will focus on disseminating historical ties and promoting knowledge of the Hispanic world at all educational levels. The Institute plans to focus on bringing the history of the Spanish-speakers in the U.S. to schools and will also promote actions related to the arts and gastronomy, among other areas.

The meeting, held virtually, highlighted the importance of promoting the cultural rapprochement of the Spanish-speaking world. Queen Sofia showed her commitment to the Institute’s mission by stressing the importance of promoting knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic.

For Dr. Carlos Cordón-Cardó, chair of the Institute’s board, “the work and mission of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute is more relevant than ever, and the support of Her Majesty Queen Sofía is vital to us. “ Furthermore, he pointed out that “we must call attention to and remember the cultural richness of the Spanish-speaking world that has been cultivated for hundreds of years.”
