Connecting Stages: Talía Awards Ceremony in New York
On Monday, June 17 the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute and Pregones/PRTT jointly hosted Connecting Stages: Talia Awards in NY in celebration of the New York City nominees and winners of the 2024 Talía Awards.
During this special evening, the nominees of the Talía Award for the “Best Contemporary Hispanic Performing Arts Production in New York” were celebrated, alongside all Latino productions from New York over the past year. Among the nominated and winning productions were Pregones/PRTT’s 2023 “The Red Rose” and “Quarter Rican,” as well as Repertorio Español’s “Radojka.” The Academy of Performing Arts of Spain (AAEE) annually presents the Talía Awards, honoring excellence in Spanish-language Performing Arts. This year, the winner was “The Red Rose” by PRTT/Pregones.
The celebration was accompanied by special remarks from Pedro Calvo Sotelo, Consul for Cultural Affairs, and Patrice Degnan, President of the QSSI Board of Directors. Following this, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, President of the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain (AAEE), and Eduardo Galán, Vice-President, described the role of the academy and the opportunities for connection with Latino theater in New York. The audience then enjoyed a short video presentation of each nominated play and a live performance of the winning piece, “The Red Rose.”
To conclude the formal celebration, there was a roundtable discussion about Latino Theater in NY and the International Scope of the AAEE. The participants included Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, President of the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain; Eduardo Galán, Vice President of the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain; Rosalba Rolón, Director of Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater; and Javier Molina, Associate Director of Actors Studio.
