On June 21 in Madrid, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that a future Constellation-class Guided Missile Frigate, FFG 67, will be named USS Galvez. This announcement was made during the U.S. Embassy’s Fourth of July Celebration, attended by U.S. Ambassador to Spain Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón and Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, Admiral Antonio Pineiro.
The USS Galvez honors Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid for his contributions during the American Revolutionary War. Gálvez played a critical role by providing supplies, intelligence, and military support to the American colonists, directly influencing the course of the war. He led Spanish forces to several victories against the British and was later recognized by George Washington for his decisive contributions.
This new frigate will be the sixth in the Constellation-class, joining others named USS Constellation, USS Congress, USS Chesapeake, USS Lafayette, and USS Hamilton. The Constellation-class frigates represent the Navy’s next generation of agile, multi-mission warships, capable of various combat operations in both blue-water and littoral environments.
Ambassador Reynoso and Spanish Ambassador to the U.S. Ángeles Moreno Bau will serve as the ship’s sponsors, symbolizing the enduring partnership between the United States and Spain.
