The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Creates the Commission for the Celebration of Spain’s Relationship with the United States 1776-2026: America&Spain250

The Commission’s mission is to celebrate 250 years of the shared past, present and continued friendship between the United States, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking world.

Today, the Fourth of July, the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, a U.S.-based non-profit cultural institution, is proud to announce the creation of the Commission for the Celebration of Spain’s relationship with the United States, 1776-2026, America&Spain250.

Starting with the significant yet little-understood role of Spain in America’s War of Independence, Spain’s contributions to the history and development of the United States are many and diverse. They span numerous realms: science, medicine, agriculture and technology, along with language, literature, religion and the arts. The Commission aims to increase public awareness of these contributions and celebrate their importance over the course of 250 years of Spain’s shared history with the United States.

The Commission also seeks to enrich the understanding of the complex, changing, yet enduring tripartite relationship between Spain, Spanish-speaking America and the United States.

The Commission is formulating a series of educational programs and cultural activities. It will seek the collaboration of institutions and individuals interested in the celebration of 250 years of friendship between the United States, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking world.

More information on the Commission will follow this announcement.

About the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute:

The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute is a New York-based nonprofit corporation founded in 1954 by a group of American Hispanophiles, who sought to stimulate American interest in the art, culture, customs, language, literature and history of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. Today, the QSSI keeps this vision current by striving to share the contributions of Spanish-speakers to the United States and by showcasing the excellence of the Spanish-speaking world in numerous fields so that lasting ties of friendship may be formed, mutual understanding promoted, and bonds of peace strengthened.
