My Spanish Kitchen Meets History: Salmorejo

Learn how to prepare “salmorejo” with our new My Spanish Kitchen video

Today, Caroline teaches us how to prepare a salmorejo! Do you know the main ingredient in this Spanish recipe? We will give you a hint: it’s not originally from Spain. . .

Mesoamericans were first attributed to domesticate tomatoes, which grew wild across South America. In fact, the word “tomato” originally comes from the Nahuatl “tomatl,” which was then passed through Spanish into English. However, the Spanish were the first to introduce tomatoes to Europe, which soon became an essential ingredient in Spanish cuisine. For example, tomatoes are the main ingredient of well-known recipes such as salmorejo, a refreshing cold soup popular in Andalusia.
