On the occasion of the first United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism, the QSSI co-sponsored a screening and conversation about the Goya Awarded Film ¨Maixabel¨ with special guests including Maixabel Lasa and Amy O’Neill.
Lasa and O’Neill were each a victim of unspeakable tragedy in two different countries, Spain and the United States, who shared their experiences, challenges, and stories of their resilience. This event fulfilled the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute’s mission to spread awareness of the history, arts, and culture of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world in the United States.
Synopsis:
In the year 2000, Maixabel Lasa’s husband, Juan María Jáuregui, was killed by ETA. Eleven years later, she receives an incredible request: one of the men who killed Juan wants to meet with her in the Nanclares de la Oca prison in Álava (Spain), where he is serving his sentence after breaking ties with the terrorist group. Despite her reservations and her immense pain, Maixabel Lasa agrees to meet face to face with those who ended the life of the person who had been her companion since she was 16 years old. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” she said, when asked why she was willing to confront the man who killed her husband.
(In Spanish with English subtitles)
This event was made possible thanks to the partnership between the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, the Permanent Mission of Spain to the UN and Film at Lincoln Center.
