Full Presentation of the Portal of Hispanic History - U.S. Debut in Houston Public Library

May 17th, 2023 - Introduced for the first time in the Americas, the groundbreaking academic tool was unveiled to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and an audience of 250 invited guests in the historic Spanish Renaissance-style Julia Ideson Building at the Downtown Houston Library. Civic leaders, diplomats, scholars and QSSI supporters attended the presentation of the unique resource that has amassed the world’s most extensive database of historical figures and events across Hispanic history.

Spanish-American Diplomacy and Partnership in the Time of the Revolution

April 18th, 2023 - The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, and the Embassy of Spain in the United States joined together for a celebration of Spanish-American friendship to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Aranjuez on April 12, 1779, a document that marked Spain’s formal pledge of support to France in its war with Great Britain in an alliance that contributed decisively to American independence. Rare items from the Society’s research library and museum collections, and classroom resources offered by both Institutes, were also on display.

The 2022 Sophia Awards for Excellence

March 31st, 2022 - Named after the Greek word for wisdom “Sophia,” this award is presented to a person or organization that has actively contributed to the international appreciation of Spain and the Americas through a donation of time, expertise, and an innate wisdom in the areas of sciences, arts, or humanities.

Biographical Dictionary Presentation

March 30th, 2022 - In a ceremony chaired by H.M. Queen Sofia, the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute presented the Electronic Biographical Dictionary (DB~e) of the Royal Academy of History for the first time in the Americas. Ceremony speakers included Carmen Iglesias, Director of the Royal Academy of History; Jaime Olmedo, Technical Director of the Electronic Biographical Dictionary at the Royal Academy of History; and Richard L. Kagan, American Historian and Hispanist, Professor Emeritus of history at Johns Hopkins University.

September 4th, 2020 - The QSSI hosted the United States premiere of the short film "Canción triste de alubias," winner of the Fundación REPSOL Breaking Barriers award on August 14th, 2020. In addition to the premiere, the QSSI also hosted a Q&A with filmmakers Oksana Savchuk and Alba Esquinas.
