Discover how Spain played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War through innovative, standards-aligned educational resources and digital tools. This professional development session, organized by the Louisiana Department of Education in collaboration with the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, offers educators practical strategies and materials to enrich historical understanding and promote engaging learning in the classroom. These materials are also available in Spanish for ELs and advanced World Language classrooms.

This training is especially relevant as the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence in 2026. By incorporating Spain’s often-overlooked contributions into the classroom, educators will be contributing to a more complete understanding of the nation’s founding. The session is part of the broader America&Spain250 initiative, which seeks to highlight the shared history and enduring ties between the United States and Spain.

Participants will receive classroom-ready, bilingual resources developed by the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in partnership with the Royal Academy of History and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. All materials are freely accessible through the Spanish Influence on American Historydigital platform, which includes didactical units, primary source analyses, timelines, expert videos, scholarly essays, and the Portal of Hispanic History – America.

The workshop will explore key topics such as the contributions of Bernardo de Gálvez, the Gulf Coast campaign including the Battle of Pensacola, and Spain’s influence in colonial Louisiana and New Orleans, themes that are directly mentioned in Louisiana’s Grade 3 and Grade 6 social studies standards in addition to High School United States History:

  • Grade 6 Content 1 (6.8–6.10): Spanish colonial rule in Louisiana
  • Grade 6 Content 2 (6.11): Spain’s role in the American Revolution
  • Grade 3 Content 1 (3.6a-1, 3.6b-1, 3.6c-1): Key figures and places of the Revolutionary War
  • Skills and Practices (Grades 3, & 6): Chronological reasoning, contextual analysis, and the use of primary sources
  • Skills and Practices (Grades 9-12): Examine sources in order to distinguish between primary, secondary, and tertiary sources, construct and express claims that are supported with relevant evidence from primary and/or secondary sources, social studies content knowledge, and clear reasoning and explanations to demonstrate an understanding of social studies content and compare and contrast content and viewpoints
