Battery Dance Festival has introduced New Yorkers to over 350 dance companies over more than 40 years. It is one of the most important dance events in New York City, and this year the Spanish Company “Dos Proposiciones” will perform.
The festival presents thirty international dance companies for free to the general public following its mission “to create lasting social impact by increasing human understanding and improving lives through the universal expression of dance.” There are in-person and live-streamed performances of both established dance companies and up-and-coming artists. The festival will draw over 12,000 guests and over 35,000 virtual viewers.
“Dos Proposiciones” is a dance company based in Seville creating works for indoor and outdoor venues for over 22 years.
The artistic work of the company has constantly evolved into an in-depth study of the genres of dance and theater, working from the artistic need to tell stories using all the artistic resources that a story itself requires: voice, visual arts, or even circus. No medium is off the table if it is meaningful and adds to the artistic scene.
Pacto de fuga, will be performed for the first time in US in Friday’s program. Battery Dance Festival selected this piece in 2019 for 2020’s festival, but due to the pandemic, the event was canceled. This weekend, the piece finally comes to New York.
Raquel Madrid, director of the company, describes the piece as the answer to the choreographer’s concern for exploring the coexistence between contemporary dance and urban landscape. The creation process was based on the three dancers’ research: an immersion in a public venue, a frequented plaza in Seville, Spain. Its music and theme genuinely represent Andalusian culture.
New York City Harbor and the Statue of Liberty serve as the most spectacular backdrop for any performance of dance or theater, and Battery Dance Festival proudly features both. Don’t miss the opportunity to see “Dos Proposiciones” in the most iconic outdoor dance stage this Friday August 17th at 7pm. Also, for those who want even more dance, the company will be teaching a workshop on Saturday August 20th.
