The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute is proud to join the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino as a National Partner of Arts & Culture.
First and foremost, we would like to thank the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino for the invitation. We are thrilled to join this organization and its partners in making history for the American Latino community.
For years, FRIENDS has fought to tell the stories of Latinos and Spanish-speakers in the U.S. and ensure that those stories have a permanent home so that every American can better understand the richness and diversity of our country. They are the only organization exclusively dedicated to the creation of a National Smithsonian American Latino Museum in Washington, D.C. Today, we join over 80 non-profit organizations in support of their amazing cause.
Even though American Latino contributions in the U.S. span centuries, most Americans remain unaware of the past and present role of Latinos in building and strengthening our nation. Our national museums must portray a complete picture of American history, one that highlights the impact of American Latinos throughout history. FRIENDS strives to create a museum that will educate, inspire and encourage respect and understanding of the richness and diversity of the American Latino experience within the U.S. and its territories.
By becoming National Partners of the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino, we further pledge our commitment to advance appreciation, respect and knowledge between the United States, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking world. We wholeheartedly believe that sharing cultural knowledge and histories must be a priority in the United States.
After 25 years of fighting to create a museum in our nation’s capital, the long-awaited Senate hearing to finally set the effort in motion will take place today, November 17.
We look forward to making history together.
